Western Rail Corridor must be kept on track
January 19, 2009
Today, I gave my backing to the ‘West on Track’ campaigner, Fr Michael McGreal, who called at the weekend for continued Government investment into the Western Rail Corridor.
Speaking in Westport on Saturday night, Fr McGreal said any attempt by the Government to cut back on the project should be opposed from all parties in the Dáil as the WRC has the support of politicians from all parties.
Cutting back on investment into vital pieces of infrastructure was not the way for the Government to deal with the set of economic circumstances it now finds itself in.
We are not going to be in recession forever and, when we do emerge the other side, we’re going to need a proper transport infrastructure in place, not an inadequate one that will be unable to allow us take full advantage of our improved circumstances. Fr McGreal is absolutely correct when he says that the ‘West on Track’ campaign has cross-party support and its that support that will ensure that the money earmarked to complete the project will not be touched.
