Government contractors sending jobs to Mumbai – O’Mahony
June 8, 2010
MAYO Fine Gael TD, John O’Mahony has criticised the practice employed by broadband providers 3 to use the services of a Call Centre based in Mumbai, India, for solving problems experienced by Irish users of the service.
“This can’t be compared to the practice where private companies use India based call centres. The situation here is that the Irish Government gave the contract to 3 to provide broadband in Ireland and there should be some obligation on the part of 3 to ensure that the call centre for problem solving is based here in Ireland,” he said.
Deputy O’Mahony said he had been made aware of the issue when people contacted his office. “What has happened here was that people had signed up with 3 but when they had a problem they were put through to a call centre in Mumbai. The problem they had was not resolved and whoever was on the other end of the in India said they would get someone to call them back but that never happened,” he said.
“Basically, what is happening here is that the Irish Government, through giving the contract to 3, are supporting jobs in India and not here in Ireland. That doesn’t sound right,” he said.
