Shameless rip-off as airlines hike Paris football flights to €300 – O’Mahony
October 19, 2009
Flights hiked from €25 to €125 in minutes
Airlines were quick to rip-off Irish football fans by hiking fares to Paris where Ireland will play our World Cup play-off on November 18th, Fine Gael Sports Spokesman, John O’Mahony TD, said this afternoon (Monday).
“Football fans will rightfully feel aggrieved by this obvious and unjustifiable rip-off.
“Ireland will play in Paris on November 18th but the price of flights is off the wall. Ryanair is charging €316 to fly out on either the 17th and 18th and fly back the day after the game. Flying Aer Lingus is no better with the cost of travelling to the match on the same dates setting you back €320.
“Ireland’s draw against France took place at 1.00 pm today. At 12.45pm, the cost of a November 17th flight to Paris on the Ryanair website was €24.99 before taxes and charges. At 1.15pm it became €124.99. Aer Lingus flights to Paris for the same date were priced at €30 just three days and this morning they similarly ballooned in price
“The extent of the rip-off is highlighted by the fact that Aer Lingus also hiked the price of flights to Lisbon, presumable as Ireland could also have been drawn against Portugal for the play-off. Three days ago, the cost of flights was €39 but, this morning, the same flight would have cost a traveller €90.
“We all expect there to be some increase in airline prices for a game like this but cashing-in to this extent is ridiculous.”
