€29 million spent on transporting prisoners in the past two years – O’Mahony

FIGURES obtained by Mayo Fine Gael TD, John O’Mahony have revealed that €29m was spent in the past two years on transporting prisoners between prisons and court houses. Deputy O’Mahony is calling for an immediate review of the system which he says often has prison officers often sitting around in the courts until the defendant’s case is called and then, in many cases, the case is put back to another hearing date.

Mayo Fine Gael TD, John O’Mahony, who is also the party’s spokesperson on sport, has called for the immediate renewal of the Sports Capital Grants. Speaking in the Dáil, Deputy O’Mahony, told the Minister with responsibility for the payment of the grants, Minister Martin Cullen, that thousand of volunteers thoughout the country are unable to understand the reasoning behind the total abolition of the grants this year whereas in other areas there has simply been reduction in budgets.
