April 15, 2009

In the supplementary budget on Tuesday last the Minister for Finance, Brian Lenihan, announced the cut but Deputy O’Mahony said that if he had talked to Department of Agriculture officials beforehand the minister would have seen the folly in his decision.”This Government seems to be making policy up as they go along and this decision to make an 8% cut on the forestry grants just sums them up. The Department of Agriculture has placed a lot of emphasis on encouraging farmers to plant forestry on their land but despite their best efforts they are still well short of the number they had hoped for. Now, they won’t have a hope of persuading anymore farmers to join the scheme as they have just announced a cut in the premium.
