O’Mahony wants farmers paid what they are due

MAYO Fine Gael TD, John O’Mahony has called on the Minister for Agriculture, Brendan Smith TD, to immediately sanction the payment of outstanding grants owed to farmers who participated in the Farm Waste Management Scheme. It was revealed at the weekend that the Government underestimated what it has to pay to farmers by €400m and the Minister is now hoping to persuade farmers to accept some form of deferred payments. Minister must take hands off Domiciliary Care Allowance

Last week, Minister Hanafin said that all social welfare payments are currently being reviewed and she made particular reference to the DCA and the Respite Grant as areas where significant sums of money are being paid out on an annual basis. However, I believe it would be folly in the extreme for Minister Hanafin to make cut backs on either payment.It just would not be allowed to happen. The people that receive both payments are some of the most deserving people in our society and for any Government to believe that they could get away with cutbacks of this nature would be folly in the extreme. Department must pay REPS 4 money to avoid cash flow crisis for farmers

I believe, the recent failure by the Department of Agriculture to pay farmers their entitlements under the REPS 4 will trigger a cash flow crisis in the farming sector unless Minister Brendan Smith TD immediately fulfils the Department’s pre-Christmas promise and hand over the money to the farmers. Farmers were led to believe that the money due under REPS 4 would be paid immediately after Christmas but it’s now two weeks since the festive season and still the farmers await their money. Sheep farmers are facing a very difficult future a fact that was acknowledged in the Aylward report and evidenced by the major reduction in the national sheep flock so it is imperative that they receive financial support immediately.
